A few rotten deck boards do not necessarily mean the entire deck needs replacement. The condition of the framing underneath is an important part of determining the appropriate repair. We review problems such as:
- Rotten, split or damaged deck boards and boards that have worked loose
- Soft or deteriorated areas in the deck surface
- Damaged or loose stairs, treads and landings
- Loose railings, damaged railing sections and deteriorated posts
- Localized deterioration in framing and connections
- Weather damage and deterioration around areas that stay damp
Visible damage helps identify where to investigate; it does not establish structural safety. The repair recommendation depends on inspecting the affected components and, where appropriate, the concealed areas supporting them.
Deck Board Replacement
Individual deteriorated boards can sometimes be replaced without rebuilding the entire deck when the supporting structure remains suitable. We check the affected boards, their attachment points and the condition underneath before defining the scope. If damage extends into the joists, replacing surface boards alone will not address it.
Replacement boards need to suit the existing dimensions and layout. Colour and finish can differ from older boards, so we discuss the expected appearance alongside the extent of the repair.
Deck Stair Repair
A loose tread or damaged step may involve more than the walking surface. We review treads, risers where applicable, supporting stringers, connections, landings and railings to identify the affected parts. Replacing a tread may be appropriate when its supports are suitable; deterioration in stringers or connections can call for a more extensive stair repair.
Deck Railing Repair
Loose, deteriorated or damaged railing components need an assessment of both the railing and what it attaches to. The issue may be a damaged section, a deteriorated post or an attachment into weakened material. We evaluate that condition before deciding whether reattachment, component replacement or broader work is appropriate.
Deck Framing Repairs
Visible deck-board damage can sometimes indicate deterioration underneath. Where appropriate, we inspect the joists, beams, posts and connections around the affected area. Reaching concealed framing may require access below the deck or removal of some boards.
Localized framing or post repairs may be possible, but framing cannot always be repaired in isolation. If deterioration is extensive or structural questions remain, we discuss the need for a broader scope or further assessment before proceeding.
Repair or Replace the Deck?
The decision depends on the extent of deterioration and the condition of the parts you would keep. An inspection is needed before recommending either approach.
When localized repair may make sense
Repair may be practical when damage is limited to a few boards, a stair component or a railing section and the remaining supports and connections are suitable for that work. A defined repair can address the affected area while retaining usable parts of the existing deck.
When replacement deserves consideration
Widespread deterioration, damage affecting several supporting components or recurring problems across the deck may justify considering replacement. Compare the full repair scope with a rebuild rather than judging by the surface alone. See our new decks and full replacements for installation options and project photos when a localized repair is not the right fit.

Residential Deck Repair
We help homeowners address damaged wood decks and the stairs and railings connecting them to patios, gardens and outdoor living areas. Whether one corner has softened or the steps have started to loosen, describe what has changed so we can plan the inspection. See our Surrey service page for local information or our exterior services for other work around the property.
Strata & Townhouse Deck Repair
Strata councils, property managers and townhouse owners can request an assessment of deck repairs at multi-unit properties. Provide the affected unit numbers, access arrangements and any council approval requirements. Written scopes and photo documentation help explain the proposed work for council or property records.
If several decks have localized problems, include them in the enquiry so we can review the scope and scheduling together. Each deck needs its own condition review; similar appearances do not necessarily call for the same repair.
What Affects Deck Repair Cost?
Deck repair costs depend on what needs replacing and what is involved in reaching it. A written quote follows the condition review and agreed scope. Key factors include:
- The amount and location of deterioration, including concealed damage
- The number of boards, posts or other components requiring replacement
- Materials, dimensions and the finish needed to suit the existing deck
- Deck height, accessibility and site conditions
- Stair, railing and underlying framing work
- Demolition, removal and disposal requirements
Arrange an inspection and quote so the estimate reflects your deck. Photos can help explain the problem initially, but concealed conditions may need closer inspection to establish the scope.
Deck Repair FAQ
- Can you replace only the rotten boards on my deck?
- Individual rotten boards can sometimes be replaced when the supporting framing and connections remain suitable. We inspect the affected area and check underneath where appropriate before recommending board replacement. New boards may differ in colour and finish from the weathered boards around them.
- Can a rotten deck be repaired instead of completely replaced?
- Localized deterioration may be repairable, but the extent and location of the damage matter. A few damaged surface boards are a different scope from deterioration across joists, posts and connections. An inspection helps establish whether a targeted repair is practical or replacement deserves consideration.
- Do you repair deck stairs?
- Yes. We assess damaged or loose treads, risers where present, stringers, connections, landings and railings. The repair scope depends on whether the problem is confined to a component or extends to the supporting parts of the stair assembly.
- Can you repair loose deck railings?
- We assess loose or damaged railing sections, posts and attachment points before deciding on a repair. Tightening a fastener alone may not address the problem if the material holding it has deteriorated. Some components may need replacement rather than reattachment.
- Can you repair the framing underneath a deck?
- Localized framing repairs may be possible after inspecting the affected joists, beams, posts and connections. Access below the deck or removal of some boards may be needed to understand the condition. Extensive deterioration or unresolved structural concerns may require a broader scope or further assessment before repairs can be quoted.
- Do you repair decks for strata properties and townhouses?
- Yes. Fix Up House accepts deck repair enquiries from strata councils, property managers and townhouse owners. Share the affected units, access arrangements and approval requirements so we can review the scope. Written estimates and photo documentation support council or property records.
- How much does deck repair cost in Surrey?
- The cost depends on how much deterioration is present, the materials and number of components involved, deck height, access, stairs, railings and the condition of the framing. Removal and disposal also affect the quote. Send us a description and arrange an inspection for a written estimate based on your deck.
- How do I know whether my deck should be repaired or replaced?
- Start with an inspection of the affected components and their supports. Repair may make sense when damage is limited and the remaining structure is suitable for the proposed work. Widespread deterioration or several failing components may make replacement more practical. Appearance alone cannot establish structural safety or the full repair scope.
