How a concrete project runs
We start with the base: excavating to the right depth, compacting properly, and setting grade so water sheds away from your house or neighbouring properties. Forms go in next, followed by rebar or mesh reinforcement sized to what the slab will carry. That's all in place before we ever call for a truck.
We time pours around the forecast — concrete placed in cold, wet conditions without adjustment cures unevenly and is more prone to surface defects. Once poured, we finish the surface (broom, trowel or stamped, depending on the project) and cut control joints at planned intervals so any shrinkage cracking happens along those lines instead of randomly across the slab.
Reinforcement and load
Anything that will carry a vehicle — a driveway or parking pad — gets rebar or wire mesh reinforcement. A walkway or patio on well-compacted base can sometimes run thinner and unreinforced, but we size this to the real load rather than defaulting to the cheapest option.
Curing in Lower Mainland weather
Concrete is walkable in 24-48 hours and ready for vehicle weight around a week, but doesn't reach full strength for about 28 days. Our wet, cool climate slows early curing, so we plan pour timing and, when needed, adjust the mix for cold-weather placement rather than pouring on a day that works against the concrete.

- Does a driveway or patio need rebar or mesh?
- For anything that will carry vehicle weight — a driveway or a parking pad — yes, we reinforce with rebar or wire mesh. A pedestrian patio on well-compacted base can sometimes get by with a thinner, unreinforced pour, but we size the reinforcement to the actual load rather than skipping it to save cost.
- Why does concrete crack, and can it be prevented?
- Some hairline cracking is normal as concrete cures and settles. The bigger cracks come from poor base compaction, missing control joints, or pouring too thin for the load — we compact the base properly and place control joints at the right spacing to control where cracking happens, rather than leaving it to chance.
- Do you handle drainage and grading, or just the pour?
- Both. A driveway or patio poured without the right slope away from the house is a drainage problem waiting to happen, especially given how much rain this region gets. We grade and check slope before forming, not after.
